A data centre run by the people on the floor
Fernhill Data (sample) is a Springfield company. We own the building, the racks and the drives, and we answer the phone ourselves.

From one server room to two halls
We started in 2009 with twelve racks in the basement of a print works (sample). The presses left; the racks took over both halls.
Today about 260 companies keep servers or data here, most of them within an hour’s drive. We do not resell another company’s cloud: what you rent is on this floor.
How we run the floor
The routines behind the two power feeds and the cold aisles.
Rounds
An engineer walks every aisle every four hours and logs temperatures and alarms (sample).
Generators
Started and run on load once a month, announced to customers a week ahead.
Changes
Planned work in the power and cooling rooms on Tuesdays, 10:00 to 14:00, never on Fridays.
Incidents
Customers get a call or an email within 15 minutes and an update every 30 minutes (sample).
Records
Every rack has an elevation drawing; it is updated after each change and sent to the customer.
