Scans explained
How long each scan takes and how to get ready. Your letter has the details for your appointment.
X-ray
A few minutes. Walk-in with a referral form.
Ultrasound
15 to 30 minutes. Some scans need a full bladder: drink water an hour before.
CT
10 to 20 minutes. You may have a dye injected; eat lightly beforehand.
MRI
20 to 60 minutes inside the scanner, which is loud; we give you ear protection. Tell us about any metal in your body.
Paying for a scan yourself
If your insurance does not cover a scan, you can pay for it. Ask for a quote before you book.
