Most portrait sessions at the studio use one large octabox and a reflector (sample). Moving that one light changes the picture more than adding a second one.
Close to the face and to one side, the light falls off quickly and the picture turns moody. Further back and nearer the camera, it becomes bright and even. With the reflector closer, the shadows open up.
