About Northlight Studio

One photographer, one room with good light, and a slow, friendly way of working (sample).

Hello, I'm Ines

I have photographed people for twelve years, first for a local newspaper, then for theatres and small businesses (sample). In 2019 I opened Northlight Studio in an old print works on Foundry Row.

Most of the people I photograph tell me they hate having their picture taken. So I explain everything: where the light is, where to look, what we are trying to make. Nobody is rushed and nobody is posed into shapes.

Light first

Every session starts with a drawing like this one. It shows the backdrop, where you stand, the camera and each light. We go through it before the first picture, so nothing in the room is a surprise.

Most portraits need only one big soft light and a reflector. More lights do not make better pictures; the right distance does.

K

Key light: a 120 cm octabox to camera left, 1.3 m from the face, a little above the eyes

R

Reflector: silver, camera right, lifts the shadow side of the face

B

Background light: a small spot that brightens the paper behind you

C

Camera: 85 mm lens at f/5.6 and 1/160 s, about 2.5 m away

How I work

Small things that make a session easier, whoever you are.

You choose

You pick the pictures you keep from an online gallery. Nothing goes online without your permission.

Quiet and unhurried

One session at a time, with breaks whenever you want them. Children and dogs set the pace.

Honest editing

Skin is cleaned up, not reshaped. You still look like you on a good day.

Questions people ask

I am not photogenic. Will this work?

Almost everyone says that. Light and a relaxed half hour do most of the work, and you see the pictures on the camera as we go.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. A friend, a partner or a dog is welcome, and there is a sofa in the lounge.

How long until I get my pictures?

The online gallery arrives within three days and the edited files within seven days of your choice (sample).

Do you travel?

Yes, for team days and family sessions within 40 km of Springfield (sample). Further away, ask for a quote.

Ask for a date

Tell us what the photos are for and two or three dates that suit you. Ines replies within one working day (sample) and books a short planning call.
