Funding and disclosures
Who pays for the desk and what could sway us, written down.
How we are paid for
Readers pay for most of what we do. The rest comes from grants with no say over what we write.
Reader memberships
About two thirds of our budget (sample).
Journalism grants
From two foundations that fund local news (sample).
The weekly newsletter
Free; it carries no advertising.
What we refuse
Money from anyone we report on, and any crypto as payment.
Disclosures
What could sway us, written down so you can judge.
Holdings
Editors list any crypto they hold. Nobody writes about a coin, company or project they hold or are paid by.
Gifts and trips
We accept none from anyone we cover.
Former jobs
One editor worked for a payments company until 2019 (sample).
Advertising
None. The newsletter and the site carry no ads.

Why readers pay for it
Memberships keep the site free to read and free of ads. Members get the Friday newsletter a day early and can send questions to the top of the queue.
Not sure if it is true? Ask the desk
Send us the message, the link or the question. An editor reads every one and replies within three working days.
